College Tech Prep in North Carolina prepares students for employment and continuous learning through rigorous, challenging, seamless and integrated academic and technical studies, and leads to the completion of a high school education and a two-year postsecondary education certificate, registered apprenticeship, associate and/or a four-year baccalaureate degree.

The definition of a Secondary College Tech Prep Student changed on July 1, 2010, to "a secondary student who is enrolled in or has completed a second-level (starred) CTE course." Look for the asterisk (star) by the course in one of the following two documents.
- List of CTE courses for students who entered the ninth grade prior to Fall 2009.
- List of CTE courses for students entering the ninth grade Fall 2009 or later.
